Marans orignated in France as the name suggests. They were first imported to the UK in the 1930s.
There are 9 recognised colours of French Marans: Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, Black, Birchen, Copper Black, Wheaton, Black-tailed
Buff, White and Columbian .
Copper Black being the most popular colour at the moment.
All have red or orange eyes and slight feathering to their legs. They all tend to be relatively medium sized in comparison
to other breeds, the average weight of a Cockerel being approx 3 1/2 kilos.
Marans are renowned for being docile, gentle birds who are hardy and good foragers.
Marans lay around 150 dark brown eggs each year.
Marans are dual-purpose birds, extremely popular for their brown eggs but also useful as a meat bird for surplus cockerels.
