There are many terms involved with poultry which can
be difficult to understand, so I am listing the basics for beginners in no particular order
Pair - one male and one female
Trio - one male and
two females
Quartet - one male and three females
Pullet - female who
has not had her first adut moult usually less than a year old
Hen - female after adult moult in
poultry and also female turkeys
Cockerel - male before first moult
Cock
- male after adult moult
Stag - refers both to turkey males and gamefowl males
Drake - male duck
Duck - female duck
Gander - male goose
Goose - female goose
POL - meaning point of lay at 20 weeks old
Moult
- when a bird sheds its feathers and grows new ones
The Fancy/Fanciers - communal name for people
who show/exhibit poultry
Pin feathers - when the feathers are newly grown and are covered by a
protective, waxy membrane.
Feather-pecking - when birds peck out feathers of their pen mates
Mites - parasitic insects who live on poultry and in their houses
Worming - the removal
of worms (de-worming) in poultry by means of licensed, chemical supplement in feed. Flubenvet being the only licensed
product available at present.
Lice - parasitic insects who live on poultry only
PCGB - Poultry Club of Great Britain, largest organisation involved with the promotion of the hobby and facilitators
of the National Championship Show at Stoneleigh, held on 1st and 2nd December
DEFRA - Government
Agency in charge with the registration and implementation of Government legislation regarding poultry
Utility
- bird bred for its laying or meat production capabilities
Hybrid - commercially reared birds
bred for their laying or meat capabilities. Usually sex linkable as day olds
Sex linked
- birds who have been designed to show pullets from cockerels at day old ie Rhode Island Red x Light Sussex thus avoiding
the rearing of unwanted cockerels
