I have kept Sumatra Game for approx 3 years and enjoy seeing their lovely
beetle green sheen in the sunshine!
Sumatra Game are a member of the Asian Gamefowl group of poultry. Historically they have been used as
pitfowl but nowadays are mainly kept as show birds, however they still retain their 'gamefowl traits'.
Due the long tail, its character and the growth of multiple spurs some people
strongly believe that they are close relatives of the pheasant family.
Sumatras are fairly good layers and sitters They are very active and
are good foragers. This means they can reek havoc if allowed to free range in a small garden space.
Large pens are essential to keep and accomodate them as their flightly natures
mean they tend to fly vertically and can cause themselves damage if frightened. Ideally an aviary situation is
best suited to this type of bird.
Desirable physical features: a small head with black eyes, small peacomb
and a long tail.
Their skin should be as dark as possible this is known as being 'Gypsy faced'
and is most desirable in breeding birds for showing.
Sumatras weight: male 5.5 Lbs (2.5 Kg), the hen 4.4 Lbs (2.0 Kg).
No hatching eggs available til later in the season
