Polands are extremely eyecatching with their crest being the most unique characteristic of the breed. Males carries
a large crest which is shawl like and females' crests are more uniform in shape and rounder.
They are a soft feather light breed which are an extremely good layer of pure white eggs. Very popular for backyard
keepers and well as exhibition fanciers.
Polands are not known to be good broodies. They do sit very occasionally but their flightier natures can make them
poor parents.
Crest Care: The crest needs special attention.
- Crests must be kept clean and dry as they are prone to having problems if kept in damp or muddy conditions.
- Polands are best given drinkers which are lipped to avoid them wetting the crest when drinking.
- Care needs to be taken for mites as this is a perfect hiding spot for them
- Feather pecking of crests can be an issue if kept in mixed pens with other breeds. If this is an issue, stockholm
tar can be put on crests to deter this. If damage has been sustained, then a rubber band or tape can be placed around
the unaffected feathers into a 'top knot' to allow them to regrow undisturbed.
Colours:
I keep polands in silver laced, white crested blue and black and gold laced.
White crested varities do not carry a beard. Laced varities do.
When breeding blue and black polands you will get approximately 50% of each colour.
Blue to blue produces black, blue and splash offspring.
When Gold laced 100% gold laced will be hatched
Silver laced will breed 100% silver laced.
Hatching eggs available in all colours
