A Cayuga Duck is a breed of domesticated duck used for egg and meat production as well as an ornamental bird.
The Cayuga name is taken from Cayuga Lake in USA where the breed was popularised.
Adult Cayuga ducks weigh approximately 6 pounds and are characterized by a black bill and black feathers which is an iridescent beetle green in the correct light. The Cayuga duck has black
shanks and toes. Ducklings have black plumage. They lay a blue/green egg.
For those who wish to keep ducks, but have close neighbours that would make
keeping other breeds of ducks such as Call Ducks impractical because of
the loud quack, The Cayuga duck may be an alternative as its quack is not as loud or frequent as the Call. The temperament
of the Cayuga is docile.
Cayugas don't fly well either, they are a heavy duck so are ideal for keeping in enclosed gardens. They
need access to water though not necessarily a pond, a large children's sand pit will suffice.
Care must be taken to keep ducks away from predators such as foxes. Cayugas need to be safely locked
away in a house at night as they do not fly up to roost out of harms way.
Adult Cayuga Ducks enjoy eating snails, slugs, worms and most other insects.
This makes them a 'green' method of ridding the garden of unwanted pests. However, due to their size and weight they can make
mess in the garden so supervised 'bug eating' sessions are advised!!
The Cayuga duck is notorious for being a good broody more so than other
domestic breeds of duck. Incubation for the eggs is 28 days. When using an incubator the temperature should be 99.5 °F at
86% humidity for days 1-25, and 98.5 °F at 94% humidity for days 26-28.
NO HATCHING EGGS AT PRESENT DUCKS ARE BROODY
